Il 14 aprile a Lake Las Vegas, Nevada (USA) si è corso un emozionante XTERRA West Championship, triathlon off road sulle distanze di 1.5K di nuoto, 30K di mtb e 10K di trail run.
La gara ha salutato le vittorie di due icone del circuito, il sudafricano Conrad “The Caveman” Stoltz, che ha dedicato il successo a suo padre Gert recentemente scomparso, e la svizzera Renata Bucher che è riuscita a battere sul fil di lana la campionessa mondiale XTERRA Lesley Paterson.
Sul podio con Stoltz sono saliti lo statunitense Josiah Middaugh e l’altro sudafricano Dan Hugo, con l’ironman australiano Chris Legh giunto qualche secondo più dietro.
Bucher e Paterson sono risultate divise da soli 32 millesimi di secondo, al terzo posto un’altra statunitense, Emma Garrard, staccata di oltre 7′. Per Bucher si tratta della quarta vittoria XTERRA consecutiva, dopo quelle ottenute nelle tappe di marzo di Guam, Philippines e Saipan.
La canadese pluriiridata di specialità Melanie McQuaid, recente vincitrice dell’Ironman 70.3 California, è partita nonostante l’influenza e si è piazzata al quinto posto.
