Domenica 29 ottobre 2017 a Kapalua, isola di Maui, Hawaii (USA), si è corsa la 22^ edizione dell’XTERRA World Championship off-road triathlon che ha visto trionfare Flora Duffy e Bradley Weiss.
Per la portacolori delle Bermuda è il quarto titolo iridato XTERRA consecutivo, che le permette di raggiungere il mitico record di Conrad “The Caveman” Stoltz: sono loro gli unici due atleti al mondo ad aver centrato un poker di vittorie a Maui.
Il sudafricano ha invece centrato il suo primo successo che gli ha fatto vincere, così come a Duffy, un premio di 20.000 dollari (montepremi totale di 100.000 dollari).
Più di 800 triatleti, provenienti da 52 nazioni, hanno partecipato all’evento in una giornata ideale per le condizioni meteo.
Sul podio insieme a Duffy e Weiss sono saliti tra le donne Barbara Riveros (Cile) e Laura Philipp (Germania), tra gli uomini Mauricio Mendez (Messico) e Ruben Ruzafa (Spagna).
In tutto sono stati 15 gli italiani che hanno portato a termine la gara, il più veloce è stato Andrea Zanenga; da segnalare anche la prova di Luca Molteni, capitano degli italiani a Maui.

«I did my first XTERRA World Championship in 2013, and I can vividly remember almost falling over running on that beach down there. So, to be here today after winning four in a row is pretty unbelievable and pretty crazy to think about where I started. It’s a very special day for me, and what made it even cooler was that Bradley Weiss – Bad Brad I like to call him – won his first world title. We’ve done a lot of training together over the years. He helped me in my final prep to Rotterdam and I would like to think I helped him today.»
